Improve fire safety at home

The Rescue Department of Central Uusimaa conducted a self-assessment of residential building fire safety in Vantaa in 2025. The key areas for improvement relate to deficiencies in and maintenance of fire extinguishing equipment, as well as charging stations for electric and hybrid vehicles.

Sort out your first-aid fire extinguishing equipment 

Have you made sure that you have a fire blanket and a portable fire extinguisher at home that have been maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions? Fire blankets are readily available at local shops and portable extinguishers can be bought at hardware stores. 

In case of fire, attempt to extinguish it. If the fire cannot be put out, leave the fire area immediately.

Charge your electric car safely 

  • For home charging, use a fixed charging point installed by an electrician. A mobile charging cable poses a fire hazard in continuous use. 
  • Clean and maintain the charger plugs regularly. 
  • Avoid using extension cords and timers. 
  • Support the charging cable so that it does not put a strain on the outlet or lie on the ground where it could be damaged. 
  • Make sure that the charging station can be disconnected from the power supply from a single location.
