Physiotherapy for children and young people

The aim of physiotherapy is to promote and improve the child's motor development and ability to move and function. Children with musculoskeletal pain or postural problems are also referred to physiotherapy.
During the visit of an infant (under 1-year-old), the physiotherapist assesses the baby's body position and movements, as well as sensorimotor skills and capabilities. The physiotherapist guides how to support the development of sensorimotor skills or consider the symmetry of the position wi…th different carrying positions and in play situations. A follow-up plan for physiotherapy is made together with the parents and, if necessary, a child health clinic.
For children aged 1-6 years, the physiotherapist assesses the child's age-appropriate motor skills and capabilities and gives advice on how to support child´s development. Physiotherapy can take place individually or in groups. Your and your family's activity plays a key role in the rehabilitation.
During the guidance and assessment visit for primary school children (around 7-12 years old), the physiotherapist assesses the need for rehabilitation and provides guidance and advice. Together with the child and the parents, the physiotherapist prepares a follow-up plan, which may include various exercises or guidance for everyday physical games or hobbies. The child's own and the family's activity is important in rehabilitation.
In children's physiotherapy, functional capacity assessments and rehabilitation plans are made for children and young people with developmental disabilities. In addition, the need for assistive devices is assessed, and guidance is given to the client and his close circle.

Prerequisites

The service is intended for children from infants to elementary school-aged children and their parents of the wellbeing services county of Vantaa and Kerava. Middle school-aged children and secondary school students are referred to physical therapy at health center services on the recommendation of a health care professional ( Physiotherapy for adults | Vantaan ja Keravan hyvinvointialue (vakehyva.fi) ).

The Children's Physiotherapy service is free of charge. You can be referred to the service based on a healthcare professional's assessment of the need for treatment or with a referral by a special early childhood education teacher.
