Speech therapy for children and young people

Speech therapy strengthens your child's communication, speech and language development and eating skills and prevents learning difficulties. During guidance and evaluation visits, the speech therapist interviews the parents and the child and evaluates the child's skills and capabilities by observing the child in various functional situations and using standardized tests. If necessary, the speech therapist cooperates with early childhood education or school staff together with parents.
Based on t…he speech therapy evaluation, individual or group rehabilitation can be recommended, and remote rehabilitation is used depending on the situation. The goals and methods of rehabilitation are chosen according to individual needs.
In speech therapy, the child's language development is supported through various games, activities and play. The speech therapist guides the parents to observe the child's linguistic activity and support its development. If necessary, the speech therapist directs the use of communication aids that supports the child's speech and language development (e.g. keyword signs, use of pictures, picture folder), or directs parents to purchase other assistive devices.
In children's speech therapy, functional capacity assessments and rehabilitation plans are made for children and young people with developmental disabilities. In addition, the need for assistive devices is assessed, and guidance is given to the client and his close circle.

Prerequisites

Speech therapy is intended for children, young people and their parents of the wellbeing services county of Vantaa and Kerava.

The speech therapy service is free of charge. You can be referred to the service based on a healthcare professional's assessment of the need for treatment or with a referral by a special early childhood education teacher.

Speech therapy's Finnish-language phone service is available Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Speech therapy's Swedish-language phone service is open Mon-Thurs 12-13. You can leave a callback request Mon-Fri between 8am and 3pm.
You can cancel the booked appointment via the Maisa customer portal or by contacting your speech therapist. Please book a new appointment by contacting your speech therapist or calling the speech therapy telephone service.
