Disability services

Home modifications support independent living at home. The modifications require a service needs assessment. You may be reimbursed for the cost of acquiring the tools, devices and equipment necessary to carry out everyday tasks and for home modifications based on the service needs assessment decision.

Reimbursable home modifications include construction work that is necessary because of a disability or an illness, such as widening doors, building ramps, installing bathrooms, toilets and plumbin…g, replacing fixed furniture and building and interior design materials, and similar work in a permanent dwelling. Home modifications also include the planning of modifications and the removal of obstacles in the immediate vicinity of the dwelling. Modifications to a secondary residence and normal renovation work in the dwelling are not reimbursed. Home modifications will not be made to new buildings where accessibility can be taken into account at the construction stage.

The reasonable costs of home modifications related to your disability or illness may be reimbursed in full. For modifications made during the new construction phase, the reimbursement covers only the additional costs due to a disability or an illness that exceed the normal construction costs of a similar dwelling. Demolition work related to the modifications is not covered by the disability services.

Prerequisites

To receive the service, please contact the counselling service for people with disabilities either by phone, email, through the Maisa client portal or by sending an application online or in paper form. You can find the up-to-date contact information in the Service units tab. You will be guided to obtain the necessary statements during the assessment of your service needs.
