Adult social work

Communal housing for adults is meant for people with mental health or substance abuse problems and other people in need of similar services. It is arranged for those who need suitable accommodation as well as care and attention. The aim is to offer a safe and high-quality everyday life despite possible disabilities.

The services may include care and attention according to the client's needs; activities to maintain and promote their ability to function; meal, clothing, bathing and cleaning servi…ces; as well as services that encourage participation and social interaction. Housing support services are purchased separately.

If you need support for more than one of the issues below, can no longer manage in your own home despite home-based support services and need a safe place to live that offers daily help and support and a meal service, you might need communal housing.

Communal housing helps you with, for example:

- managing financial matters, e.g. paying bills and applying for benefits (you must be able to take the main responsibility for them)
- daily routines, e.g. laundry and cleaning
- taking care of your wellbeing and health, e.g. sleep-wake cycle, hygiene or medication
- increasing social interaction
- finding meaningful activities, e.g. studies, hobbies, work or day activities

In communal housing, you have the option to buy a meal service. You live in a housing unit, where you have your own apartment or room, and the staff is available every day from morning till night. Communal housing is rehabilitative in nature, and the aim is that each client is responsible for doing their laundry and cleaning their rooms, for example, and get the support they need. In most housing units, residents may also take on responsibilities, such as cooking shifts, which provide meaningful activities and encourage participation.

Communal housing includes more support than supported housing.

Prerequisites

The service is meant for people with mental health or substance abuse problems or other clients of adult social work in need of similar services. The service is provided based on a service needs assessment and a client plan that identify the need for communal housing.
