Why is it worth talking about violence?

Violence is a subject that evokes a wide range of emotions. You should not let unsafe living situations and the negative feelings associated with them continue to dominate your life; instead, talk about them with, for example, a healthcare or social welfare professional.

If you have experienced violence in your close relationships, it may be helpful to know that you are not alone. Many people who have been in a similar situation could reassure you that the experience of violence does not define the rest of your life. Even after experiencing severe violence, it is possible to recover and return to a good life with the right kind of support.

If you find that you have a tendency toward violent behaviour, it is also important to seek help as early as possible. There may be many underlying reasons behind violent behaviour, and these are best addressed with a trained professional. The use of violence is a series of wrong choices—something that each person can influence through their own actions.

An unprocessed experience of violence can easily become a burden carried over to the next generation. For children and young people, witnessing violence between parents can be just as harmful as being directly subjected to it. Experiencing violence is not a legacy that should be passed on to anyone.
