What is life like for a family carer? We took a peek inside the homes of two different families.

It is almost bedtime for the child placed with the foster family. Homework is done, and there is some time to just be together before turning in for the night.

“It brings us joy when a child or teenager feels at home and starts to trust us,” say the foster family parents with a smile.

Foster care is a way of life in which a child or young person is provided with a safe daily routine and a home, and the parents find meaning in their lives.

The foster parents are grateful to VAKE for its support of foster families.

“We feel that we are appreciated and supported in every situation. The social workers at VAKE know our family, and we work well together.”

Free and varied work

“Are you coming here?”, Tiina Tuominen calls out cheerfully from the porch of a small, yellow house.

Tiina is a family carer who works with the elderly, people with disabilities, and children. She used to work in a nursing home, but that became too exhausting over time.

A friend recommended that Tiina first try working as a short-term family carer. Eventually she decided to become a full-time family carer.

“You get to be your own boss, and there are fewer customers than in traditional care work. I can even go on an outing with my customers, and it doesn’t feel like work,” Tiina says.

Family care requires making a commitment, but Tiina finds the work meaningful.

“This isn’t the kind of physical work that’s terribly strenuous.”

We are always looking for family carers for people with disabilities, elderly persons, children, and young people. You do not need to be a healthcare professional; we are looking for ordinary people and families to provide family care services.

There are various forms of family care, and they depend on the situation and needs of the person being cared for. In practice, family care means that you or your family take care of someone who needs help.

We offer you training and support throughout your time as a family carer. As a family carer, you will receive a monthly remuneration as well as reimbursement for expenses incurred in providing the family care.
