For families with children, summer is a wonderful season for spending time together as a family – or is it?

Anna Romppanen works in psychosocial support for young people.

“It’s very common in the summer for deeper issues to float to the surface,” says Meiju Torn, who works with relationship issues counselling among parents of families with children.

Challenges in communication, financial worries, and conflicting expectations can cause tension in parental relationships. As for younger family members, the end of the school year changes their daily routine.

“Some young people spend more time with their friends, while others feel lonely,” says Anna Romppanen of Youth psychosocial services.

Open dialogue and shared rules

Both Torn and Romppanen encourage families to engage in open discussion about everyone’s expectations for the summer. It is easier to adapt to shared summer plans and rules when everyone has been heard.
