Katriina Hospital, Ward 5

Katriina Hospital is a part of the Vantaa and Kerava wellbeing services county's hospital services.

Ward 5 of the hospital has 16 beds in single and double rooms, and it acts as a support ward for the At-home Hospital.

The ward specialises in palliative and end-of-life care. Most of our patients are terminally ill, and the aim is to provide adequate symptom relief and a good quality of life, even when death is imminent. We approach our patients as individuals, with warmth and dignity, while ma…intaining an atmosphere of hope. We also acknowledge the patient's loved ones who can support the patient at different stages of the illness.

The ward employs a multidisciplinary team of health professionals. Each patient is assigned a primary nurse who knows the patient best. The team also includes a ward doctor, registered nurses, practical nurses, a physiotherapist, a ward supervisor, a service instructor and, if necessary, a hospital chaplain, a social worker and therapists from other disciplines.

When a patient arrives at the ward, we assess their situation and listen to their wishes and goals for treatment. Our patients are assessed daily by a multidisciplinary morning team. Our ward does not have regular patient rounds. The patients meet the doctor once they arrive and flexibly as needed during their stay. Our care team stays in close contact with the patient's loved ones, and we organise care consultations when necessary. We also hold target meetings every week to assess the progress of the treatment and to plan the follow-up care. If the situation allows, patients in palliative care are discharged to follow-up at the At-home Hospital.
