The team of psychologists for children under school age works with children and their families. The goal of the work is to assess and support the growth and development of children together with parents and early childhood education. The psychology work with children under school age also includes student welfare work in pre-primary schools.
In basic education, the psychologist works in schools and supports children and adolescents and their studies together with families, educational staff, and partners. In the work of school psychologists working in upper secondary education, the priorities are brief interventions and assessments directly with the adolescent or young adult, as well as communal welfare work.
Psychologists in student welfare do individual as well as communal welfare work that is both preventive and supportive. The work includes improving the welfare of the community and groups, working with clients, service guidance, consultation, as well as development and expert work.
There are a total of 57 positions for psychologists in student welfare around Vantaa and Kerava. There are psychologists working in early childhood education, pre-primary education, basic education, and upper secondary institutions.
The work of a psychologist in student welfare is characterised by its diverse nature. You will encounter a wide range of tasks and clients in your work. The psychologist in student welfare is often the first point of contact regarding the matters of the child, adolescent, or student, and it is up to them to start investigating the matter.
No two days are the same, and every client’s situation is unique, so you will never get tired of the work. The work feels meaningful, since you get to work close to people’s everyday life and have a direct impact on the life of the clients, like educational institutions, early childhood education, and parents.
Psychologists in student welfare give guidance and advice based on the situation and the client’s age, discussion sessions, consultation with the staff at early childhood education and educational institutions, preventive communal work, planning of support measures, psychological assessments or examinations, as well as service guidance.

In the child guidance and family counselling works 19 psychologists at several service points: Pakkala, Koivukylä, Tikkurila and Myyrmäki in Vantaa and Kerava. Child guidance and family counselling supports families, where there are babies, children, and young people between 0–21 years.
The psychologists for the family counselling services varied tasks include child guidance and family counselling for children and parents, support of family members interaction, examinations and networking, as well as functioning as an expert in the teams for family counselling and cooperation networks. The psychologist duty for families with babies is to provide support in early interaction for pregnant and babies and their parents.
Our multidisciplinary team and colleagues offer strong support to psychologists. You will never be left alone, and the best part of the job is the wonderful colleagues and a good atmosphere. There is also a wide variety of work duties available, so us psychologists have a great opportunity to choose our duties according to interest, says Kirsi Kuronen, supervisor for family counselling services.
In the unit for mental wellbeing of children and adolescents works 17 psychologists. There are psychologist´s both in the childrens as well as in the young people´s teams.
Patients between 6–21 years are treated in the unit, who has moderate mental health, substance and addiction problems. We collaborate closely with other services for children, young people, and families.
The unit for mental wellbeing of children and adolescents is a service at a basic level. The psychologist's duties´ include work as part of a multidisciplinary care team and bring the psychologist's expertise to the team. The psychologist assesses and examines the children and young person´s together with the whole family, taking into account the patient´s age.
In addition to the individual work the psychologist gets to work in pairs with other employees and it is also possible to work with groups. The work also includes close collaboration with networks, such as school.
Psychologists are supported by strong collegial support and the support from the own team supervisor. Work guidance is arranged for psychologists as an own group.
