Freedom of choice to choose care unit

According with the Health Care Act you have the right to choose your care unit for non-urgent health care from all health centres and hospitals in Finland.

The patient can choose health centre, who is responsible for hers/his services in primary healthcare. The health centre can be changed with a written notification at most once a year.

The health center in your own residental area is automatically your own health centre. You can change health centre when you want within the wellbeing services county or choose it from an other wellbeing services county or Helsinki. You can also change maternity and child health clinic within your own wellbeing services county.

If you choose a health centre from another wellbeing services county or Helsinki, the choice also applies for oral health care, maternity and child health clinic services, rehabilitation services and medical supplies distribution as well as short-term care at a health centre hospital. You can can only get these services from one wellbeing services county at a time.

The specialist health care unit can be chosen together with the doctor who is giving the referral.

You can find information on how to choose care unit on the web pages of Ministry of Social Affairs and Health (STM).
