Rescue Department

Central Uusimaa Rescue Department provides and maintains safety. Our operational objective is for Central Uusimaa to have a good safety culture and efficient rescue and emergency medical services. Our fire stations are located in Vantaa, Hyvinkää, Nurmijärvi, Tuusula/Kerava, Mäntsälä and Järvenpää. Pornainen is also part of our area of operations, but it does not have its own fire station.

Our operations are spread across the wellbeing services county of Vantaa-Kerava and Central Uusimaa. We op…erate in both wellbeing services counties under a joint operation agreement. Around 500,000 residents live in our area of operations, which is intersected by busy roads and commuter traffic.

Road and rail transport, food and energy production facilities and the Helsinki-Vantaa international airport all pose a major-accident risk. The Ring Rail Line also brings its own particular challenges, as the airport train station alone sees around 8,000 passengers a day on weekdays.

The strategic planning of the rescue services is guided by the service standard decision. It ensures that assistance arrives on time and with sufficient resources. The decision also takes into account accident prevention and preparedness.

Several units on standby, supported by cooperation

We have eight rescue units, two fast response units, three hydraulic platform units, one heavy rescue unit and one tanker truck on immediate deployment. Immediate deployment means that the unit is on the move within one minute of receiving the alert. In addition, we have 12 ambulances on call around the clock, plus one part-time ambulance. The Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District (HUS) provides ambulance services at three levels of care.

From anticipating accidents to responding to them, the work of the rescue department is supported by 30 contractual fire brigades, which constitute an important resource for the rescue services. We contribute to the training of the contractual fire brigades and provide them with the necessary equipment.

We also cooperate with our neighbouring rescue departments. We work particularly close with the Helsinki City Rescue Department, Itä-Uusimaa Rescue Department and Länsi-Uusimaa Rescue Department (the HIKLU network). In addition, we work together with the Emergency Response Centre Agency, the Police of Finland, the Finnish Border Guard, social and crisis emergency services, Finnish Customs and various other actors.

Accident prevention and preparedness

Accident prevention is a significant part of our work. We are heavily involved, for example, in surveillance, structural fire safety, evacuation safety, chemical control, safety training and safety communication.

It is our responsibility to ensure, through contingency planning and advance preparations, that the rescue department is able to carry out its tasks even in a crisis situation. We also support the preparedness and contingency planning of municipalities. We take care of warning the population in case of danger and accidents, as required by the Rescue Act, and we maintain and develop the existing public alarm system.
